Chocolate-Toffee Bars

Skill required: Beginner 1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1 6-ounce package semisweet chocolate pieces
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan. Set aside.
2. Work butter in a bowl until creamy.
3. Add sugar and beat until fluffy.
4. Add egg and vanilla and beat until blended.
5. Add flour and oats; mix well.
6. Spread evenly in prepared pan.
7. Top with chocolate and nuts.
8. Bake 20 minutes.
9. Cool slightly in pan.
Yield: 16 - 2 inch squares.
